A U.S.-based organization is urging President Joe Biden to take more steps to safeguard ships using the Mideast trade route, as the Houthis' yearlong military campaign on Red Sea shipping alters the global supply chain.

The American Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA) also encouraged union longshore workers and businesses to restart contract negotiations to avoid another East and Gulf Coast port closure, which could cripple the American economy.

In a letter to Biden, the AAFA urged the government to step up efforts to defend international commercial channels in the Red Sea from Yemen-based Houthi terrorists.

While lengthier journeys across the Red Sea and greater freight rates have boosted container line profits, the trade association claims the situation has grown untenable.

New Balance, Ralph Lauren, Lululemon, Carhartt and Under Armour are among the group’s members.

While the AAFA commended the U.S. military for its efforts to protect shipping lanes, including escorting ships and imposing sanctions, the group said Houthi attacks have only become more frequent and brazen.
