The United States has imposed sanctions on the Houthi National Committee for Prisoners Affairs and its head, Abdulqader Hassan Yahya al-Murtadha, over alleged human rights abuses against detainees in Yemen.

The US State Department cited al-Murtadha’s direct involvement in torture, cruel treatment, and the ongoing detention of journalists, human rights defenders, political opponents, UN staff, and NGO workers.

The sanctions aim to publicly condemn the Houthi’s human rights violations and pressure the group to release unjustly detained individuals.

The internationally recognized Yemeni government welcomed the US decision, viewing it as a significant step towards holding the Houthis accountable for their crimes.
