Yemen experienced expected dry conditions, with minimal rainfall across the country, according to latest METEOROLOGICAL REVIEW by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

FAO review outlined that:

In December 2024, minimal precipitation was recorded across most regions, with limited rainfall noted in Socotra and to some extent in the eastern Plateau inlands.

Elevated areas experienced the least rainfall, consistent with typical seasonal patterns, exacerbating water scarcity and increasing the risk of prolonged dry spells.

Ground-based rain gauges and satellite data showed low rainfall throughout the country with a maximum of 68 mm in Socotra

The review found that the dry conditions in many areas worsened water scarcity and hindered agricultural productivity, particularly in areas reliant on residual moisture and light showers, while the highland areas experienced cooler weather, with nighttime temperatures dropping below 5°C, increasing the risk of frost.

In contrast, the review found that coastal and lowland regions enjoyed mild and habitable daytime temperatures.

Regarding Food Security, the review found that declining agricultural productivity, coupled with rising costs for external inputs, exacerbated food insecurity, especially in vulnerable areas.

The review forecasted that from December 2024 through the end of January 2025, some areas in Yemen are anticipated to receive normal rainfall.

As a result, agricultural activities in January 2025 will focus on cultivating and pre-paring winter crops, especially in highland and irrigated areas.

Crops such as wheat and barley will require protective measures against temperature fluctuations, including mulching and the use of frost-resistant varieties. Vegetable farming will persist in coastal and irrigated areas, with consistent irrigation being crucial to counteract low rainfall.
